In a surprising move, Aveek Sarkar on Wednesday resigned as Group Editor of "The Telegraph" and "Anandabazar Patrika".

Sarkar said the resignation was just part of a succession plan and that he would continue as chairman of the group.

Sarkar had come under heavy criticism for the group's allegedly "biased" coverage against West Bengal chief minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee during the recent Assembly elections in West Bengal.

TMC leaders had accused him running a relentless smear campaign against the party.

However, ABP group sources maintained that his resignation had nothing to do with the TMC.

Anirban Chattopadhyay has been appointed as the new editor of the Anandabazaar Patrika while Rajagopal has been appointed as the new editor of "The Telegraph".

The Kolkata-based ABP group is one of the oldest media empires in India.
