BitTorrent unveils Bleep, a serverless messaging platform

The pre-alpha release of the P2P chat client will be initially available to selected users on Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems.

New Delhi: BitTorrent has unveiled its P2P messaging platform - BitTorrent Bleep. The pre-alpha release of the serverless chat client will be initially available to selected users on Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems.

In a post on the official BitTorrent blog, Jaehee Lee, senior product manager, explained the reasons behind BitTorrent building a private messaging service. "With the susceptibility of communications platforms to snooping and hacking, reminders of which seems to surface every week, we realised that we were uniquely qualified to build a better platform and application," Lee said.

"Our big idea was to apply distributed technology to conversations. That means no servers required. This enables people using Bleep to make a direct, decentralised connection to someone they trust. Bleep offers the freedom to communicate without the risk of metadata being exposed."

Users can sign up for the closed pre-alpha invitations with email, mobile number, or even incognito (which means that no account or personal identifiable information is necessary).

The BitTorrent Bleep currently allows text messages and voice calls to online contacts (no offline messages, yet) and an account can only be used on a single device/installation and cannot be moved.

BitTorrent suggests that Bleep could emerge as preferred a tool for journalists communicating with sources without exposing their identity or their content, members of the diplomatic corps sharing private dispatches and also for personal and business communication.

You can request a pre-alpha invite to BitTorrent Bleep here.
