Patna: The Bihar government will appoint 67,000 cooks for all the government schools in the state and build 7,600 kitchen sheds for the preparation of mid day meals to bolster the infrastructure following the Chhapra tragedy. The government will also provide utensils to school children for mid day meals.

Pointing out the lack of facilities in schools, Bihar Education Principal Secretary Amarjeet Sinha had on Thursday said, "There are no first-aid kits in schools or there is lack of awareness about first-aid medication in schools. One major problem is many schools do not have their own land. This school also did not have its own building. There are 13,500 schools where we do not have land to construct a kitchen shed."

He had said that the state government has asked the Centre to allocate more funds for hiring cooks and construction of kitchen sheds in Bihar. The state government will also ensure that the schools which lack in mid day meal infrastructure collaborate with nearby schools where the scheme is already in force.

Sinha had said the Chhapra mid day meal tragedy in which 23 children lost their lives after eating mid day meal does not look like food poisoning, rather it seemed like poisoning of food.

Even three days after the tragedy, no arrests have been made so far. The headmistress of the school who has been named in the FIR, is still absconding. The forensic report is expected today.
