New Delhi: The minister of state for home affairs, Kiren Rijiju, had a close shave on Tuesday afternoon as the BSF chopper he was travelling in had to make an emergency landing in a small field in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, due to bad weather.

According to reports, the helicopter was caught in heavy rain and fog, which made navigation difficult due to the low visibility. The experienced BSF pilots managed to keep the chopper steady and manoeuvre it around for 10 minutes amid the rain, before finding a small strip for a safe landing.

The Mi-17 helicopter with Rijiju and seven other passengers and crew members on board was flying from Guwahati to Ziro in Arunachal Pradesh when it faced heavy rains and fog this afternoon.

The chopper landed around 3:30pm and within half an hour, the SP of Itanagar rushed to the spot. Kiren Rijiju was evacuated from the scene safely. Local residents too came forward to help Rijiju and others. The minister was travelling to Ziro to attend the Dree harvest festival.

"Miraculous escape. My chopper had an emergency landing near Itanagar. Due to heavy rain chopper was caught in a very heavy fog & rain. The experienced BSF Pilots manage to manoeuvre for around 10 minutes and landed at small field. I was lucky to be landed safely," Rijiju said.

This is not the first time that the MoS (Home) has had a lucky escape. On February 9 last year, a chopper carrying Rijiju and a BJP MP made an emergency landing at Hindon airbase near Ghaziabad following engine trouble after being airborne for nearly 20 minutes.

There were eight people on-board the helicopter, including officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs and two television journalists. Rijiju had said he was travelling to Tehri to review disaster preparedness and to meet paramilitary personnel deployed along the Sino-India border.
