New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday attacked actor Amitabh Bachchan for promoting the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in a latest advertisement.

Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam said it was not necessary for Bachchan to participate in every BJP programme.

“Amitabh Bachchan is a respected person, but it is not important that he becomes a part of every stupid act of BJP. The way GST is being brought into the country, people are unhappy with it. The protests against GST might affect Mr Bachchan’s image,” he said.

Nirupam also alleged that the government was not ready to listen to businessmen who were opposing GST.
Sources close to Bachchan said he is not a brand ambassador. Although he has done a few ads, he did not charge any fees for it.

The Union government had roped in the star to promote GST, ahead of the sweeping tax reform's implementation scheduled from July 1.

In the 40-second video, Bachchan explains GST as a unifying force just like the three colours in the national flag. GST is an initiative to create 'one nation, one tax, one market', he says.
