Congress stages walk-out over alleged irregularities in appointment of 'patwaris'

Opposition Congress on Thursday staged a walk-out in the Chhattisgarh Assembly over alleged irregularities in the appointment of 'patwaris' (a village-level revenue official) in the state.

Opposition Congress on Thursday staged a walk-out in the Chhattisgarh Assembly over alleged irregularities in the appointment of 'patwaris' (a village-level revenue official) in the state.

Raising the issue through attention motion, Leader of Opposition TS Singhdeo, state Congress chief Bhupesh Baghel and MLA Siyaram Kaushik levelled allegations of corruption in the appointment of 'patwaris' in Bilaspur and Balod districts.

Revenue and disaster management minister Prem Prakash Pandey said selection process was held for 18 vacant posts of patwari in Balod in 2012. As two of the selected candidates did not join the service, two others in the waiting list were appointed, he said, ruling out any irregularity.

However, complaints were received about recruitment process for 65 posts in Balod this year following which a two-member committee of joint secretary, revenue and disaster management Chandrakant Uike and director, land records Ramesh Sharma was constituted to probe it, the minister said.

As the committee found faults in the selection procedure, the entire process was scrapped, he said. Subsequently, examination to 79 vacant posts was held at 14 centres in Bilaspur earlier this month.

The entire selection process was fair and transparent, the minister claimed, adding that aspirants were selected from all these centres on merit. But, not satisfied with his reply, Congress legislators accused the government of corruption in the appointments and staged a walk-out.
