Former Congress leader and accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots Sajjan Kumar has moved an application before the Delhi High Court, seeking 30 days to surrender, news agency ANI reported.

The court is likely to hear the application on Friday.

Kumar in the plea before Delhi HC said, “I need time to settle my children and grandchildren. I have six grandchildren. The life sentence came all of a sudden".

Meanwhile, Kumar appeared in another case related to the riots on Thursday and surrendered his mobile phone following the directions of the high court in its order convicting him on December 17. The court adjourned the matter for January 22 after he said his main counsel was unavailable.

In the case before the trial court, three persons — Kumar, Brahmanand Gupta and Ved Prakash — are facing trial on charges of murder and rioting pertaining to the killing of Surjit Singh in Sultanpuri.
