Gwalior: The Nathuram Godse statue installed at the Hindu Mahsabha office in the city was seized by the police on Tuesday and a worker of the right-wing group was arrested. A manhunt has been launched to nab the other responsible for installing the idol, police said.

The district administration had served a show-cause notice to the Mahasabha and termed the act illegal under provisions which regulate religious places in the state.

When the Mahasabha members did not furnish a reply within the stipulated time, the administration decided to seize the idol. They gave the organisation a one-hour ultimatum to remove the idol voluntarily but no one turned up.

To stop the authorities, the group had even locked up its office, forcing officials to break open the door. The Mahasabha had threatened agitation if the idol was removed but members were nowhere to be seen.

The Godse idol was installed inside the Daulatganj office on November 15, the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin. The Mahasabha had also asked for land from the district administration for a temple dedicated to him, but their plea was not entertained.

It had left the Congress fuming. Party workers marched to the police station in Bhopal and sought registration of an FIR against those glorifying Godse. The Congress had also issued threats that its workers would be compelled to remove the idol if the administration failed to act.
