Deadpool: How Marvel’s American Superhero is Helping Kolkata Police Teach Traffic Rules to Youngsters
As part of the ‘Deadpool’ inspired campaign, the city police has put up specially designed posters of the masked superhero, with messages about safe driving across the city as well as on social media.

Kolkata: In tune with pop-culture, Kolkata Traffic Police has decided to capitalize on the popularity of the American superhero film ‘Deadpool’ to inspire youngsters to follow traffic rules.

As part of the ‘Deadpool’ inspired campaign, the city police has put up specially designed posters of the masked superhero, with messages about safe driving across the city as well as on social media.

Young drivers often skip wearing safety gear such as helmets or seat belts while driving their bikes and cars. According to traffic police in Kolkata, drunken driving is also becoming an increasing nuisance on city roads.

However, the police feel that ‘Deadpool’ – a superhero icon that today appeals to a large number of young people, will help them understand the importance of valuing the lives of others.

Speaking to News18, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, Rajeev Kumar said, “We have one of the best traffic management systems in India. Our officers work round the clock to provide excellent traffic system in the city. We keep on implementing innovative ideas to teach traffic mannerisms to people and ‘Deadpool’ is one of them. Soon we will take this message through ‘Deadpool’ to colleges and university students”.

The Kolkata Traffic Police department has already put up the instructional ‘Deadpool’ posters on its Facebook and Twitter accounts.

According to the Commissioner, the campaign was already evoking a positive response on social media with Deadpool posts receiving almost 1,400 ‘likes’ and 800 ‘shares’ on Facebook.

“I am sure ‘Deadpool’ will help us in creating awareness among people about following safety rules while driving. I would like to request people to follow safety rules like wearing seat belts, helmets, avoiding drunk driving and rash driving,” he said.

On May 24, a poster of the Deadpool was put up with the renegade superhero posing on a scooter while wearing a helmet.

The witty poster read, “I have super-healing powers, you don’t! Always wear helmets.”

“In another poster, we added the hashtag #BuckleUp. In that, ‘Deadpool’ is peeking from the back seat of a car at a passenger not wearing seat belt on the front seat, and saying, “Just checking your seat belt, Dopinder”, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kolkata Traffic Department, Sumit Kumar said, adding that this was only the beginning.

“In future, we are planning to incorporate a lot of other innovative ideas to engage the people in order to provide word class traffic system in the city,” he added.

‘Deadpool’ is a 2016 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. He first appeared in comic books in 1991. ‘Deadpool 2’, a sequel to the 2016 film was released this year.
