Bengaluru: A 34-year-old drug peddler was arrested from Bengaluru courtesy his honesty in filing his income tax returns.

The accused, Rachappa, had filed his I-T returns for the year 2016-17 declaring an annual income of Rs 40 lakh, without being transparent about his source of income.

He had been living in a villa in the city's Kanakapura road at a rent of Rs 40,000 per month.

The Koramangala police arrested Rachappa and his accomplice Srinivas (47) on January 29, as they were trying to make a drug sale at a hotel in Koramangala.

Upon his arrest, the police seized 26 kgs of ganja, 5 lakh rupees and an Innova car.

According to the police, the income tax department had sent him a notice asking him to declare the source of his income following which he had registered himself as a class 1 contractor.

Rachappa, who hails from Chamrajnagar district of Karnataka, had come to Bengaluru and was a sintering worker.

"There are areas in his native place and some areas in Visakhapatnam where they have been cultivating ganja. We are investigating the same. He has also been peddling drugs through youngsters. Some 3-4 members in his team are still absconding," said police.
