Moon sighted, the world celebrates Eid-ul-Fitr
The festival of Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of the fasting month of holy Ramzan.

New Delhi: Muslims across the world celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr on Wednesday, after the moon was sighted on Tuesday evening kicking off feasts and festivities. "The Eid moon has been sighted. Id-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Wednesday," Maulana Mufti Mohammed Mukkaram, Shahi Imam of Fatehpuri Masjid, said.

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of the fasting month of holy Ramzan. Across India on Tuesday Eid prayers were being offered at mosques.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wished people well-being and prosperity on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

The spirit behind observing Eid-ul-Fitr is to "rededicate ourselves to truthfulness, sincerity, self-control, patience and human dignity showing complete obedience to Allah", Omar said in his Eid message.

The Chief Minister reminded people of the essence of the Eid saying "the day demands us to remember the poor and the needy and share happiness with them".

Omar expressed hope the festival would bring peace, prosperity and well-being for the state and the people all over the world.

US President Barack Obama also greeted Muslims across the globe on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr and referring to the popular uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa said that his country would continue to stand by all those people in their efforts to secure basic necessities and fundamental freedoms.

"Michelle and I would like to send Eid greetings to Muslim communities in the US and around the world. Ramzan has been a time for families and communities to share the happiness of coming together in intense devotion, reflection, and service," Obama said in his special Eid message.
