H S Kohli had helped a gangster in getting his passport quickly by waiving of the police verification process.

New Delhi: H S Kohli, an Army officer who was sacked for faking encounters, has run into trouble again after facilitating passport verification for an alleged gangster.

The case came to light after Delhi Police arrested one Mahesh Kumar, who is wanted in a murder case, last week when he was about to flee the country on a passport procured by furnishing fake documents.

The agent, Manish Choudhary, who arranged the passport for the alleged gangster was also arrested.

On questioning of the duo, it came to light that Manish knew the dismissed Army officer and he had sought his help in getting the passport for Mahesh quickly by waiving of the mandatory police verification process.

The Army officer was questioned on Sunday by Special Cell officers on his role in the case. Police, however, decided not to register any case against him as it believes he had no real intention to help the alleged gangster.

"The Army officer told us that he did not know he was helping a gangster. Mahesh's name was referred to him by the passport agent as his friend," PTI quoted a senior Special Cell official.

Kohli admitted that he knew Manish but did not know his connections with the alleged gangster.

According to police, Kohli referred Mahesh's name to a batchmate of his posted at the Delhi Station headquarters and that Army officer had signed the certificate for passport verification.

Significantly, Manish was earlier involved in getting a passport for an ISI agent in 2002 and the case is pending trial in a court.
