Fashion has a way of liberating you: Sonam
The actress talks about her sartorial indulgences, 'Mausam' and more.

Mumbai: The past few days have been like a whirlwind for Sonam. From shooting for her scenes for Abbas-Mustan's upcoming film Players to attending back-to-back events to promote her latest film Mausam, Ms Kapoor has only had work on her mind. Not that she minds all the hard work but the young actress says she definitely doesn't mind squeezing in some down time from her films and instead make her fashion taste buds work overtime.

Sonam, unarguably Bollywood's most well dressed lady, candidly admits, "Actually, I just love shopping. I have a genuine interest in fashion. It is like an hobby you nurture - like some people collect art, some collect CDs..." When Sonam made an appearance on the red carpet at this year's Cannes Film Festival, fashion critics from the world over fell in love with her Jean Paul Gaultier gown. At every step she took in Cannes, there were photographers waiting to capture her next sartorial move - whether be it sporting an exquisite saree designed by Indian designer Masaba or a creation by an international couture house.

Making headlines with her much-publicised tiff with her former co-star Abhay Deol and even getting involved in a war of words with author Shobhaa De on a microblogging site, it comes as no surprise that the actress admits to having a 'don't care' attitude in life.

Sonam made no qualms when she recently admitted to the press that before Mausam happened to her, she never bothered socialising with her co-stars. Sonam says she is the least affected by what others think of her. In fact, that attitude is often portrayed in her fashion sensibilities as well - the actress sports some of the most futuristic fashion trends in the world with elan, a trend that not many Bollywood divas have dared to attempt.

"I am not scared of experimenting," emphasises Sonam who single-handedly resurrected the trend of wearing jackets with accentuated shoulder pads (think Madonna in the 80's) in Bollywood and even sported the whole androgynous look, currently a rage on the international fashion ramps. "I want to have fun. I give a s*** to everything else. Fashion has a way of liberating you..." she says.

Fashion is definitely something that Sonam can go on raving about. After all, she has been a fashion icon in most films that she has done in the past. She made the anarkali famous with Delhi 6 and with Aisha, the latest Chanel and Dior designs became coffee table conversation. But our chat gradually veers towards her latest film Mausam, where she is paired opposite Shahid Kapoor.

Director Pankaj Kapur and the marketing team behind the film have left no stone unturned in creating the maximum buzz around it. Shahid and Sonam sent out handwritten media kits to the press and just yesterday, a success party was thrown to celebrate the film's music release. Much has been talked about Shahid's new look in the film and also about Shahid and Sonam's sizzling chemistry on screen. Does she anticipate this movie to become one of the hallmark features of her career? Sonam mulls over the question for a moment and replies, "I hope so..." She pauses and then continues, "It has definitely got a buzz. In a very long time, people haven't seen a purely romantic film in Bollywood. Let's see how it works"

While work has been keeping her busy, and two songs from Players still remaining to be shot, she admits she is looking forward to working with her sister Rhea sometime soon again (They worked together in Aisha). "Rhea and I would love to work together again. Hopefully, we can find a wonderful script that is appropriate for us."
