New Delhi: Acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair's 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist' is hitting the Indian screens on Friday, May 17. The film is based on a novel of the same name by Mohsin Hamid, and stars Riz Ahmed and Kate Hudson in the pivotal roles. Shabana Azmi and Om Puri will also be seen in the film.

The film is about the meteoric rise and fall of a Pakistani migrant in the US. It shows a young man chasing corporate success on Wall Street and struggling between his American dream, a hostage crisis and the enduring call of his family's homeland.

Mira Nair said the audience shouldn't confuse "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" with a 9/11 story as the event is only a game-changer in her movie.

"I don't want to confuse the movie with a 9/11 story, it's more of a love story and a thriller - 9/11 is a game changer in the movie. The story is about a man who tries to find himself," she said.

"I have made all kinds of films with the subcontinent in my heart, but 'The Reluctant...' is my first human thriller, a coming of age story that bridges our world with America," she said.

The film stars Britain-based Pakistani origin actor Riz Ahmed in the lead along with Hollywood biggies Kate Hudson.

"It is a film like no other - an Indian director making a Pakistani film across several continents, uniting A-list of Hollywood talents with legends from the Hindi film industry, creating a modern sound that crosses borders with its Sufi qawallis, rap music, Faiz poems, and techno groove," said the director who took five years to come out with 'The Reluctant...' Her last film was 'The Namesake'.

Delhi, which is a twin city to Lahore, doubled for the Pakistani city for filming the teahouse, the university and all the interiors. A second unit filmed the streets of Lahore and the exteriors for four days without the actors.

'The Reluctant Fundamentalist' will have to battle the mammoth presence of 'The Great Gatsby' at the ticket window. (With inputs from IANS)
