New Delhi: Gurmehar Kaur's grandfather Kamaljit Singh on Tuesday came out to support his granddaughter saying that whatever she did was for the betterment of the students and to stop any kind of violence against them on university campuses.

Speaking exclusively to CNN-News18, Kamaljit also asked the government "to stop inflaming the issue" adding that "they were not trying to cool down the issue".
"She said the correct thing. She didn't say anything against India or any political leader."

Supporting Gurmehar's view that "Pakistan didn't kill her father, the war did", Kamaljit asserted that the "circumstances were such that it happened". "Who should we blame for our son's martyrdom? He died in the war, who should we name?" he asked.

Kamaljit also said that his family was apprehensive about Gurmehar's security. When asked about the ever-growing debate on nationalism and the various interpretations of the term, Kamaljit said: "Punjabis live for the nation. Will they teach nationalism to us? We have lost our son, do we need to prove anything?"

Remembering his son as a braveheart, who died in the 1999 Kargil war, Kamaljit said, "My son killed 26 enemies before laying down his life," adding that he was a brave beyond measure.

Gurmehar Kaur, a Lady Sri Ram student, took social media by storm after taking on ABVP in the aftermath of violence in Ramjas College. She posted a picture holding a placard with "I am a Delhi University student, and I am not afraid of ABVP" written over it.

Several Celebrities -- Randeep Hooda and Virender Sehwag being among the first few -- reacted on social media even as the charges and countercharges continue to flow thick and fast. Gurmehar has allegedly received rape threats on social media and registered a complaint with the Delhi Commission for Women.
