How to unwind in seven easy steps

This weekend transform your bedroom into a stress-free cocoon!

After a long day at work, all you want to do is sit back, relax and get away from the buzz of the recession, inflation and lay-offs. No, we are not suggesting a weekend getaway. We give you seven steps to transform your bedroom into a stress-free cocoon to help you unwind!

De-clutter

Start with what's in sight first – the dirty laundry, rumpled sheets, messy worktable and so on. Once you are done with that, move on to the closets. Hard as it may be, it's time to get rid of those clothes you always hoped to fit into again 'someday'. Give them to the poor. The good deed will make parting with your precious stuff a little easier.

Vaastu nugget: Getting rid of junk and creating space reduces negative energy.

Less is more

Fewer the pieces of furniture and accessories around the room, more the space you have. If you have multipurpose furniture (eg a bed with storage) make use of it.

Feng Shui nugget: Heavy, immovable furniture traps negative energy and causes you to stagnate.

Breathe easy

Light a couple of aromatherapy candles – vanilla, lavender, cinnamon, whatever works for you! You could also try a couple of scented agarbatties (incense sticks) or a bowl of pot pourri. The soothing aroma will help you relax and unwind.

Stress reliever

Vaastu tip: Avoid sleeping under beams and staircases. They are made of concrete and iron and tend to cause stress or even severe illness.

Go subtle

Pick bed linen with pastel or earthy colour. Avoid busy prints, large floral motifs or fluorescent colours. They tend to keep your mind active and you might have trouble falling asleep.

Also make sure the lighting is not too bright but subtle. If you read in bed, you might need a special reading light by your bedside.

Calm-a-sutra

Feng Shui tip: Avoid decorating your bedroom with paintings of dragons, wars like the Mahabharata and other such depictions. They evoke tensions and feelings of unhappiness.

Siestaaa...

Vaastu tip: Don't sleep with your head in the north direction because your body is a magnet, with your head as the North Pole and your feet as the South Pole. If your head is in the north, it produces a repulsive force with the earth's North Pole, which can be harmful.
