IFFI: Don't celebrate me - Fatih Akin
Celebrated German director Fatih Akin was at IFFI talking to the media and fellow film makers about his understanding of cinema and script writing...

38-year-old Fatih Akin, German director of Turkish origin, who is known for his films like Head On, In July, New York I love you, The Edge of Heaven, was in Goa fielding questions by Indian film-maker Anurag Kashyap...Some excerpts....

"I listen to everyone's opinion. I think not listening is the problem. Script writers and film-makers have their ears blocked with ego. Even otherwise as a society we don't listen. America doesn't listen to Middle East and Middle East doesn't listen to women, women don't listen to men...etc."

"I had a female professor at the film school, who made feminist kind of movies. She told me that I need to look into the female characters of my movies, as a part of the project. When I started thinkiing about it, i realised that in my movies men were more precise, while women were only angelic. That opened many doors for me. I realised that men and women are no different. A woman is just me with tits. Soul is very much me."

"The film Intimacy changed my life. Hanif Qureishi's work mean so much to me."

"I have been shy of sexuality because I have been taught like that. And I envied people who could be wild and free."

"The swastika T-shirt that I wore, that created controversy...When I look back I think that was stupid. It was okay in Turkey but not in Germany. I wouldn't wear it today."

"Cinema is such a huge science. One life is not enough."

Akin's masterclass was followed by a special screening of his film, Soul Kitchen. Talking about the movie, Akin said, "I have had this script with me for five years. I didn't want to give it away for someone else to direct it. I was not sure if I should do it either. It was like this one flower, whose petals you keep pulling away and tell yourself, she loves me, she loves me not. I was not sure how the script would work out. Finally I made it myself. This movie, in a way, talks about how life happens to you when you are busy making other

plans."

Soul Kitchen, a brilliant movie, speaks about a restaurant owner who

is all ready to give his passion up for the love of a woman. He touches rock bottom, before he starts rising again.
