Bhopal: India plans to construct 1,400 bunkers along the border in Jammu and Kashmir to ensure the safety of residents there, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday.

“Those living in bordering areas are no ordinary citizens and are our strategic assets whose safety is of paramount importance for us,” Singh said in Bhopal while replying to questions on Jammu residents being forced to leave their homes amid recent ceasefire violations by Pakistan.

Singh said his ministry has ordered the construction of bunkers and that the Mehbooba Mufti-led J&K government had assured that these would be ready in few months.

In a piece of advice to Pakistan, Singh said the neighbouring country must stop sponsoring terrorism if it wanted cordial relations with India. He added that India was ready to help if Pakistan was not able to weed out terrorism from its soil.

“Pakistan must stop sponsoring terrorism. We want better ties. If Pakistan is unable to crack down on terror, India is ready to help,” Singh said.

On the delay in rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits, Singh said, “Then J&K chief minister Mufti Mohammad Saeed was told by the Centre that budget has been sanctioned for rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits, but he passed away soon after. His daughter and incumbent Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has now assured us that land has been identified and will be finalised shortly for the relocation of displaced Kashmiri Pandits.”
