Stampede at Belabagan temple in Jharkhand's Deogarh, 11 people dead, 20 injured
The stampede took place around 4:30 AM as a large crowd gathered for the annual Sawan Somvar celebrations at Deogarh's Belabagan temple.

Deogarh: At least 11 people have died and 20 others were injured in a stampede in Jharkhand's Deogarh district. The death toll is likely to rise.

The stampede took place early on Monday as a large crowd gathered for the annual Sawan Somvar celebrations at Deogarh's Belabagan temple. The lane leading to the temple is narrow and congested, and the local administration was unable to handle the crowd that had gathered there.

An official said that around 4:30 AM a group of devotees broke the line and started running which led to stampede. At least 80,000 people have gathered at the temple and the queue is 15 kms long.

Chief Minister Raghuvar Das has apprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the situation. "A very sad incident has happened. My deepest condolences to the family members of the deceased. The state government will provide compensation of Rs 2 lakh to families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to injured people," said Das.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the government has extended all possible help. "I spoke to the Chief Minister in the morning about this incident. He has demanded help and I have already deployed the rapid action forces to Deoghar. My condolences to all families that have lost someone in this tragedy," Singh said.

DB Sharma, Deputy Inspector General at Santhal, said, "All preparations were made for a large number of devotees. This was an unfortunate accident. The injured are being treated at the local hospital."

The authorities were expecting such a large crowd and there was a heavy police presence to control the situation, said an official.

Deogarh Deputy Commissioner of Police Amit Kumar said, "80,000 people arrived last night. The route is 15 kms long. We had full security arranged and were prepared but this happened suddenly. At 4 AM people started pushing each other to reach faster and the incident occurred. The situation is under control now and 1.5 lakh people are expected by evening. All arrangements are done for that now."

Officials said the situation is under control and devotees are offering prayers.
