Kalam, always the gentleman, says no comments

US airlines says it has not offended the former Indian president.

New Delhi: Former president Dr A P J Abdul Kalam on Tuesday refused to comment an US airline’s employees putting him through security checks at the Delhi airport on April 21.

"What has happened is a fact and there is nothing to comment about now," he told CNN-IBN on Tuesday.

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said the former president’s frisking was “absolutely wrong” and a showcause notice has been served to Continental Airlines. "The frisking or action per se was absolutely wrong. The former president and other such dignitaries are exempt from such frisking," said Patel in the Rajya Sabha.

A senior official of Continental Airlines said Kalam had not been “offended” and its employees were following rules when they frisked him. “Transportation Security Administration or TSA requirements impose a final security check in the aerobridge just before boarding the aircraft.

"This procedure is followed by all carriers flying to the US from most of the countries in the world and there is no exemption to this rule,” said Laurent Recoura, Senior Country Director India, Continental Airlines.

“We believe that Dr Kalam was not offended and we would like to thank him again for flying with us,” said Recoura.
