Meeting with a prisoner will be just a click away in a few months, as the government has decided to start online booking system for the same.

Bengaluru: In hi-tech state Karnataka, even the prisons are going hi-tech. Meeting with a prisoner will be just a click away in a few months, as the government has decided to start online booking system for the same. It is also planning to introduce video conference facilities for the family members of inmates.

Under the new system, relatives, family members and friends of inmates can book an appointment with them online. The prison website will have the names of all inmates. Whoever wants to visit can book an appointment online. On the day of appointment, they can show their online booking number to the prison authorities and meet the inmate or inmates.

Family members who live at faraway places can book an appointment for a video conference with the inmates by visiting prison website. On the appointed day, they will be allowed to have a talk via video conference. It saves both money and time for them.

Principal Secretary, Home Department Karnataka, K V Gagandeep said that online booking system was being implemented under Digital India programme and the software for this had been developed by the Centre.

Karnataka prison authorities are also introducing SMS alert system to inform the concerned jurisdictional police about the release, parole, bail etc of the inmates. Even the family members of the inmates would get such SMS alerts.

Karnataka is the first state in India to have this high-tech prison system in the entire India.
