Thiruvanathapuram: A 51-year-old woman tried to commit suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills as she was allegedly sexually harassed by a sitting MLA.

The woman's husband has alleged that the Congress legislator M Vincent, who represents Kovalam constituency in Thiruvanathapuram, used to call up the man's wife and speak to her in a sexually suggestive manner. The husband has also alleged that his wife took the extreme step as she was continuously harassed over the phone.

The police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against MLA M Vincent.

Meanwhile, the MLA rubbished the allegations and said that he is open to any investigation. He also alleged that it is a political conspiracy.

According to the police, the incident happened on Wednesday afternoon. The woman allegedly overdosed on sleeping pills, following which she had to be rushed to a private hospital at Neyyatinkara.

Neyyatinkara Dy SP B Harikumar said that the police have booked the MLA under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of IPC.

The woman, a mother of two, is under treatment and in the ICU.

The police are yet to record her statement. If the woman stands by her husband's statement, sections for sexual harassment and criminal intimidation too may be invoked against the MLA.

As per the statement of the woman's husband, the MLA has been harassing the woman over phone for several months.

The woman in question is a resident of the same neighbourhood where the MLA resides.
