Kvitova downs Lepchenko for 1st French Open QF

The fourth seed entered the day having lost fourth-round ties at Roland Garros in 2008 and 2011.

Paris: Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova reached the French Open quarterfinals for the first time by beating unseeded American Varvara Lepchenko 6-2, 6-1 Monday.

The fourth-seeded Kvitova entered the day having lost fourth-round matches at Roland Garros in 2008 and last year.

But she needed only an hour to wrap things up against the 63rd-ranked Lepchenko, the last U.S. singles player left in the men's or women's French Open draw. Lepchenko, never beyond the second round in 14 previous Grand Slam tournaments, picked up surprising victories over 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone and former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic.

Next up for Kvitova is a match against 142nd-ranked qualifier Yaroslava Shvedova, a doubles specialist who upset defending champion Li Na on Monday.
