Srinagar: Security forces gunned down a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist in Pampore district of Kashmir in an encounter early on Monday morning. The slain terrorist was identified as Umer, a Pakistani national.

The personnel surrounded three Lashkar terrorists in Sambora, in Pampore district. While one of them was killed, two others managed to escape.

According to police, Umer was part of the Abu Ismail group, which is responsible for the July 10 attack on Amarnath pilgrims that left eight devotees dead and several others injured.

Joint forces of CRPF, Army and J&K police launched a cordon and search operation late on Sunday night following information about the presence of militants, a police official said.

The search party was fired upon by the militants triggering a gun battle.

On Saturday, three Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists were killed during an encounter in Sopore town of Baramulla district.

While the forces managed to recover three AK-47 rifles from the bodies of the terrorists on Saturday, the operation also left one security personnel injured.

On Tuesday morning, Lashkar's key commander in Kashmir, Abu Dujana was killed by the forces in an encounter in Pulwama. It is being seen as a major success in counter-terrorism operations as Dujana was the mastermind behind the recent Udhampur and Pampore attacks.

Dujana had earlier managed to give security forces the slip at least 5 times in recent months. He was finally killed after a seven-hour gun battle that also killed one of Dujana's aides along with him.
