Paris: Varvara Lepchenko of the United States reached the third round at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, upsetting 19th-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 at the French Open.
After the players shook hands at the end of the 3-hour, 6-minute match Thursday, Lepchenko leaned over the net and gave it a kiss. She is ranked 63rd and playing in her 15th major tournament.
The 26-year-old Lepchenko was born in Uzbekistan but lives in Allentown, Pa., and competes for the U.S.
Jankovic is a former No. 1-ranked player who was the runner-up at the 2008 U.S. Open and has been a French Open semifinalist three times.
