Make people aware of Sachar Committee recommendations: K Rahman Khan

Union Minister K Rahman Khan on Thursday regretted that a few states were not keen in implementation of the Sachar Committee recommendations and advised the people to use the Right to Information (RTI) to exert pressure on such governments to utilise Central funds meant for minorities.

Union Minister K Rahman Khan on Thursday regretted that a few states were not keen in implementation of the Sachar Committee recommendations and advised the people to use the Right to Information (RTI) to exert pressure on such governments to utilise Central funds meant for minorities.

"In a federal system we have to implement programmes through the states, and we know some states are not implementing them. But you can use RTI as a weapon to know why they are not being implemented," the Union Minister for Minority Affairs said while addressing Congress leaders and workers in Ranchi.

He appealed to the Congress leaders to make the minority community aware of the ongoing implementation of 66 recommendations of Sachar Committee Report.

"What is lacking is making the people aware of the recommendations. Convene seminars and go to villages to make the people know about all the programmes," he said. He said the 12th plan has earmarked Rs 17,000 crore for scholarship and multi-sector development for advancement of minorities.

Fifteen per cent of funds in as many as 11 ministries are earmarked for minority programmes and all the states should ensure their smooth implementation, he said, adding an Equal Opportunity Commission would be set up soon. He regretted the opposition's role in stalling Parliament, depriving the passage of important bills, including the Food Security Bill.
