Kolkata: Following a spate of communal incidents in West Bengal, the state government on Wednesday decided to set up ‘Shanti Vahini’. Speaking to media, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the group will keep an eye on those who are instigating people towards communal tension.

“There are people who are indulged in vitiating the atmosphere of Bengal. They are trying to divide people based on their religion. To counter these people we have decided to form ‘Shanti Vahini’ in each booth in Bengal,” Banerjee said.

Banerjee said that each booth-level unit of Shanti Vahini will have a strength of 15 to 20 youths in all 60,000 booths across state. “I have asked concerned departments to finish this set up by within 15 days. We felt that police alone can’t do anything to prevent such clashes. Therefore we have decided to rope in people from their respective booths to join ‘Shanti Vahini’ to protect Bengal from these people who are conspiring against us,” she said.

“BJP is behind these clashes in the name of religion and gau raksha. They are doing this because they cannot fight with us politically. This is a pre-planned conspiracy by them to destabilize the state from its developmental path,” she added while condemning BJP central leaders for making irresponsible statement.

Banerjee said that the Shanti Vahini will alert the police or local leaders when they find someone trying to spread hate through social networking site or through meetings. “We are committed to prevent such forces who are trying hard to make a firm foot in Bengal. I would like to request Imams, Temple committees, NGOs, students and media to help us in preventing these people from creating communal tension,” she said.

On the context of Governor KN Tripathi’s response to her allegation, she said, “I don’t want to make any further comment in this issue. I had said whatever I have to say. Don’t ask me any further questions on Governor.”

TMC leader Subrata Mukherjee – who was also standing beside Mamata – said, “The Governor has become a parrot of BJP. He is speaking the words of BJP.”
