Thiruvananthapuram: CP Sugathan, the man who was at the forefront of protests against the entry of women into Sabarimala, has been appointed as the joint convener of the general council to oversee the ‘Women’s Wall’ being organised by the Kerala government on January 1.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had said the wall, a human chain to garner support for the state, from Kasargode to Trivandrum is aimed at “saving Kerala from regressing into dark ages”.

On October 17, Sabarimala opened for the first time since the Supreme Court’s verdict to allow women of all age groups to the temple premises. Sugathan was at the forefront of the protests and was among the people who heckled media persons.

When CNN-News18 tried to have an interview with former Travancore Devaswom Board chief Prayar Gopalakrishnan, Sugathan also stopped them from asking questions.

"So here we are! CP Sugathan, man among those who stopped us (NDTV) team at #Sabarimala, where we were heckled has been appointed by CM as Jt Convenor of committee to oversee human chain of women from Kasargode to TRV. The man in the orange scarf you see right behind me (sic),” tweeted Sneha Koshy, a reporter with NDTV.

Meanwhile, Vijayan, justifying Sugathan’s appointment, said, “These people might have taken different stands earlier, but now since they have come we have included them."

Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala has slammed the government's move to form the “Women’s Wall”, saying this will polarise Kerala’s society. He also took a swipe at the government for appointing Sugathan.
