New Delhi: Senior lawyer and constitutional expert K K Venugopal has been appointed as the next Attorney General of India. The 86-year-old succeeds Mukul Rohatgi, who stepped down after the first term.

Born in 1931, Venugopal served as the Additional Solicitor General in Morarji Desai-led Janata Party government in 1979.

His father M K Nambiar was also a renowned lawyer. Venugopal completed his LLB from Raja Lakhamgouda Law College, Belgaum and got enrolled as an advocate in 1954. He was designated as a senior advocate by the Supreme Court of India in 1972.

Venugopal has appeared in various high profile cases including the Karunanidhi government’s dismissal case (1976), National Judicial Appointments Commission case and the Babri Masjid demolition case.

He was instrumental in urging the Supreme Court to stay the implementation of the Mandal Commission report to stop an escalation in 1990s’ student violence. He also assisted the Supreme Court as amicus curiae in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case.

A revered constitutional expert, Venugopal helped Nepal and Bhutan draft their Constitutions. He was conferred Padma Vibhushan in 2015 by the Narendra Modi government.

Venugopal has received the “Grand Cross” award and medal from the Bar Association of Bagota, Columbia, as well as a medal and citation from the Bar Associations of Buenos Aires and Matanza, Argentina, in recognition of his achievement in human rights and legal multi-lingualism and multi-culturalism.
