A day after allegations of EVM malfunctioning rocked the Lok Sabha bypoll in Kairana, the Election Commission ordered repolling in 73 booths of Kairana parliamentary constituency. The EC has agreed to conduct the repolling on Wednesday between 7 am and 6 pm. Most of the 73 booths are in Nakud and Gangoi Assembly constituencies and five of them in Shamli.

In what may be described as the first Confidence Building Mechanism (CBM) between India and Pakistan in recent times, the armies of the two countries have decided to restore the 2003 ceasefire agreement at the border. According to officials, a hotline was established between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGsMO) of India and Pakistan and both agreed to stop violating the ceasefire.

Five men were arrested for kidnapping a 30-year-old woman from outside the Sahara Mall in Gurugram and gangraping her at a guest house in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area on Monday night. The woman, who works at a private firm, told the police that she had come out of the mall around 11pm on Monday. She was looking for an auto when the men offered to drop her home. Two of the accused are drivers for a leading app-based cab aggregator firm.

The National Capital Region is facing an acute coal shortage and is likely to run out of coal if the demand for power in Delhi continues to peak further, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a letter to PM Narendra Modi. He said that the high demand for power was due to the ongoing heatwave-like condition in Delhi. The amount of coal available in NCR, according to the CM, was not even sufficient for one full day’s power generation.

The BJP and the Shiv Sena may have some differences, but they can't do without each other, Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday suggested and wanted the alliance of the two parties to continue. Home Minister Rajnath Singh made clear that the security forces would act if there were terror attacks during Ramzan, the period during which the Centre has halted anti-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir. The Home Minister, responding to queries about continuing violence during Ramzan despite a declaration of ceasefire by the Indian government for the length of the holy month, said the Centre had only announced a suspension of operations.

A group of transgender persons took to the streets of Mohali on Tuesday to protest against a video that went viral recently. The video allegedly depicted members of the community being involved in cases of theft in Mohali’s airport road. The protesters stripped naked in the premises of Mataur Police station, before taking to the streets.

Three days after changing his stance on demonetisation and questioning the benefits of the exercise, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar upped the ante against the Centreand reiterated his party’s demand of awarding special category status to the state. Kumar’s demand for special status comes after coming under pressure from former ally turned foe, RJD chief Tejashwi Yadav, who has repeatedly accused the Bihar CM of forgetting about the demand after allying with the BJP last year.

With Shimla staring at an acute water shortage, residents in the city appealed to tourists on Tuesday, asking them to stay away from the Himachal Pradesh capital and save water while the High Court asked all construction activities and car washing to be stopped for a week.
