Nation-wide strike against bank merger today

The nation-wide strike called by the bank unions will affect services of state-owned banks today. Coming just a week after a day-long strike by the officers’ union, today’s strike which is being organized by the United Forum of Bank Unions is against the proposed merger of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda. The union opposed the move and said that a bigger sized bank will not be able to stake a place in the top 10 banks of the world.

Ayyappa devotees to gather in protest against apex court verdict on Kerala’s Sabrimala selective entry ban

On Wednesday evening, people from the states of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu will be lighting millions of lamps at the ‘Ayyappa Jyothi’ event being held across 250 centers in Kerala. The event will be a showcase of opposition against the recent Supreme Court verdict that overturned the temple’s entry ban which disallowed women “of a menstruating age” from entering. According to the organizers, Sabarimala Karma Samithi, 10 lakh devotees will be participating in the event. In the past few days, 13 women have been chased away by Ayyappa devotees after they attempted to enter the temple.

KCR to meet Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati in Delhi today

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao is set to meet with Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati in Delhi today. KCR, as he is popularly known, is on a mission to forge a federal front of regional parties, which he envisions will be an alternative to the BJP and Congress in the upcoming general elections. In the past week he met with Odhisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The Telangana Rashtriya Samithi president will also be meeting Prime Minister Modi in his visit to the capital city.

Major bureaucratic reshuffle in Rajasthan

68 IAS officers in Rajasthan were transferred on Tuesday as per a release by the Department of Personnel. For several of the officers this was the second time they were transferred after last week’s reshuffle. Many officers were also given additional charge of departments. The list includes 27 collectors and senior officers - Additional Chief Secretary Pawan Kumar Goyal and Secretary to the Chief Minister Amitabh Sharma.

Muslims in Noida barred from praying in park

On Tuesday, news of Noida police stopping Muslims workers from offering Friday namaz at a Sector 58 park made headlines. The labourers who belong to different parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal had never faced a problem with their Friday congregational prayers in the past five years. Most of them work in the nearby industries. But on December 14, as they were gathering in the park, the police informed them that it would be the last time that they were “allowed” to pray there. News18.com investigated into the ban issued against the Friday prayer gatherings and found out about the possible involvement of a Hindu group.

Trump determined to continue shutdown on demands of US-Mexico border wall

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that the government shutdown will continue till his demands regarding the US-Mexico border wall are met. “I can tell you it's not going to reopen until we have a wall, a fence, whatever they'd like to call it,” he said. The US-Mexico wall has been a point of conflict between the Democrat and Republican sides since before the President assumed office. Recently, Trump renewed his wall building efforts in the backdrop of the arrival of the Central American migrant caravan at the border and the US midterm elections.
