Bengaluru: In a first, the Bengaluru Kempegowda International Airport has introduced fully automated baggage drop off-units, by which the time taken to complete your baggage check-in at the airport should now reduce to only 45 seconds.

The airport has deployed 16 fully-automated Self Bag Drop machines that are expected to accelerate the baggage transaction and reduce the check-in queues.

The Self Bag Drop machines would initially be available for passengers flying with Air Asia and Spice Jet airlines. This facility would be expanded to more airlines in the near future, said a statement.

“Our goal is to use technology to improve the passenger experience and to make airport operations more efficient," said Javed Malik, Chief Operating Officer, BIAL.

The Self Bag Drop employs a two-step approach. A passenger will first print a boarding pass and an eezee-tag (bag tag) at a self check-in kiosk. Once tagged, the passenger will go to the baggage drop machine, scan the boarding pass to initiate the process. The bag will be measured, weighed, scanned and automatically fed into the baggage handling system, the statement said.

In case of excess baggage, the passenger will be directed to a hybrid counter to complete the check-in and payment. However, multiple payment gateway options for excess baggage will be integrated into the machines at a later stage as part of the technology enhancement.
