One and only Gulzar
Some of our famous musicians across genres pay homage to poet, writer and lyricist, film-maker Gulzar on his birthday

Poet, writer, lyricist and film-maker Gulzar celebrates his 75th birthday today. Some of his colleagues, who are also his ardent admirers, pay tribute by quoting their favourite lines penned by him.

Rekha Bhardwaj, singer:

All my favourite songs are in fact penned by Gulzar. The one I love most is Dil Hoom Hoom Kare from Rudali. The song is such a marvelous Sufiana song that is such a spiritual experience to sing. I recently sang the song at a public event and realised the deeper meaning of the words that are hidden in Gulzar saab’s writing style.

Kailash Kher, singer

There are so many and it is difficult to choose just one…but still, I would vote for the song Fatak from the film Kaminey. Unke vichaar ek granth ke tarah hai. There are so many emotions behind his words.

Swanand Kirkire, lyricist:

I love the lyrics of the song Naam Gum Jayega from the movie Kinaara.

Shankar Mahadevan, singer

Mera Kuch Samaan from Ijazat my favourite. What I like most about Gulzar’s lyrics is that he has got this amazing unstructured structure in what he writes.

Shaan, singer:

Aapki Aankhon Main Kuch from the movie Ghar is my favourite. It is a romantic poetry and yet so modern and conversational. And the level of poetry doesn't slump any where for the sake of metre or rhyme. But that's the case with all his works.

Asha Bhosle, singer:

The singer tweeted about some of her favourite Gulzar songs as Tere Bina Zindagi from Aandhi and Dil Dhoondta Hai from Mausam.

Sulaiman Merchant, music director:

There are so many and it is difficult to pin-point just one. But my most favourite lyrics would be that of the song Chaiya Chaiya from the film Dil Se. It is such an unusual song and every word has Gulzar saab’s stamp on it.

Mithoon, singer and music director:

I love the track Dil Dhoodnta Hai Phir Wahi from the film Mausam. I have heard most of Gulzaar saab's compositions and I just love them. And this particular song is a great piece of poetry.
