Opposition leader demands pay hike for themselves
Please include us in the Seventh Pay Commission. Our salaries are lesser than our secretaries. It looks like we are begging for money. We want an answer from the government. If they want to deny then they can. We want our salaries to be 1000 more than cabinet secretary, says Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal.
The MPs are insulted in India. Nowhere in the world, this happens. There should be a provision so that our salaries are atleast Rs 1 more than the senior most civil servant. People have to run their houses in Delhi plus their constituencies. The expense is high as many people pay a visit to the MPs, says former Union Minister Anand Sharma.
Ali Anwar Ansari raises the issue of manual scavenging
Ali Anwar Ansari (JD-U) through a Zero Hour mention raised the issue of manual scavenging saying this practice was continuing even after the government has declared it illegal.
Four workers, he said, died in the national capital due to toxic gases while cleaning a septic tank.
"All four are Dalits," he said, adding over 2,500 Dalits has lost their lives in last two-and-half-years due to this practice but no cases have been registered or compensation paid. While the government on the one hand talks of going to Mars, on the other it provides no equipment or apparatus for such cleaning activities, he said. "Our sensitivities are dead," he said.
Opposition targets government over agrarian crisis, farmers' suicide
Opposition members in Rajya Sabha strongly raised the issue of agrarian crisis in the country, saying farmers were being forced to do distress sale of crops in the face of cheaper zero-duty imports. Several members gave notices under rule 267 that allows adjournment of the proceedings to take up a discussion on an issue.
Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said a discussion on the matter has been accepted and the members can raise their points during the debate.
Raising the issue, Sharad Yadav (JD-U) claimed that 15-20 farmers were committing suicide every day. He said pulses production has been raised by 33 per cent but the government has lowered the import duty on it to zero, resulting in cheaper shipments into the country.
Mulayam Singh speaks on Indo-China standoff in Lok Sabha
We have always spoken on the China issue but China is planning to go against India...If Tibet is given to them then China will get easy access into India... I have not received any reply on the Indian Government's readiness on the respective issue.
P Chidambaram addresses the media outside Parliament:
Since July 10, casualties have been reported every day. 8 pilgrims, 6 jawans & 1 child have been killed. There have been many incidents of clashes between civilians & security forces numerous persons have been injured this claim defies belief & common sense. The statement made by Government is misleading & at variance with situation. On the ground, Congress repudiates the Government's claim & calls upon them to disclose measures being taken to bring about normalcy in J&K. (Image: Umesh Sharma)
