Pilibhit: The saffron colour has gained currency in Uttar Pradesh. After public transport buses and the secretariat building in Lucknow, the frenzy extended to government schools in Pilibhit district.

The Gram Pradhan in Pilibhit ordered that school walls will be painted saffron. However, this did not go down well with district magistrate Sheetal Verma, who overturned the decision as the colour is associated with a political party. She ordered that walls be painted white.

“Four schools got their walls painted in saffron color after the Pradhan ordered the school authorities to do so. Taking note of this the DM got the color changed to white,” Indrajeet Prajapati, Basic Shiksha Adhikari of Pilibhit, said.

He said the Gram Pradhan had smelt an opportunity to gain political mileage after the administration called a meeting, where it was decided that schools should be made more attractive to encourage parents to get their kids enrolled. The stress was on “cleanliness, attractiveness and utility,” but the Pradhan gave it a political meaning, he added.

“In the first week of December we had a meeting with the pradhans to make schools attractive – chamka do school ko – but that meeting lead to saffron walls. It has a political meaning and we need to stay away from all this. We all know what bhagva stands for…” Prajapati said.
