Chandigarh: The water situation in Shimla continues to be grim even as the police have booked over 200 people for holding protests demanding water supply.

An FIR has been lodged against 140 people from Kasumpti, Vikas Nagar and Panthaghati areas of the city where demonstrations were held on Sunday against the local authorities.

The protesters had blocked the National Highway chocking traffic movement and raised slogans against the municipal corporation and the state government.

Similarly, a case has also been registered against 60 workers of the Youth Congress who had protested outside the residence of Chief Minister Jairam Thakur on Friday evening.

CM Thakur held a review meeting on Sunday evening with officials after returning from Delhi. He was briefed that the municipal corporation received 37.63 million litres per day (MLD) on Sunday as against 28 MLD on Saturday while 1.85 lakh litres of water has been distributed via tankers till date.

The CM has asked the officials to distribute water according to the fixed schedule and also keep an eye on leakage of water. He informed that 11 groundwater hand pumps would be installed in the adjacent areas of the city.

Shimla Municipal Corporation Mayor Kusum Sadret too returned from her official China trip on Sunday. Speaking to News 18, Sadret tendered her apology to the locals and said that her visit was fixed in March and she had no idea that the water situation would worsen this much.

The opposition had been gunning for her head claiming that the mayor was busy “enjoying” in China. The Congress has demanded that the BJP-ruled municipal corporation be dissolved for failing to carry out its duties. The Congress also plans to move the High Court against the cases registered against its workers.
