Kolkata: Former Calcutta High Court judge CS Karnan, who was arrested by the West Bengal police on Tuesday evening on a Supreme Court order, touched down at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata around 2.30 pm on Wednesday. He was then taken straight to the State General Hospital in Bidhannagar.

After a preliminary health check-up, he will be taken to the Presidency Correctional Centre after the Supreme Court rejected his request to suspend a six-month sentence for contempt of court.

He will be lodged in the Presidency Jail where a bed and a blanket will be provided to him. A chair has also been kept and the old CCTV camera has been replaced by a new one. A team of three officers was formed to keep an eye on him to avoid any embarrassing situation.

“He will have food cooked in jail. In the evening, he can have tea, and for dinner, we have dal, alu parval sabzi, egg curry and roti,” a Presidency Jail official said.

On Tuesday, Karnan was arrested from a house in Coimbatore's Malumichampatti area in Tamil Nadu. He was in hiding since May 9 after a West Bengal police team, led by DGP (home guard) Raj Kanojia, launched a massive hunt for him.

Speaking to News18, Raj Kanojia said, “After days of investigation, we finally tracked him down in Coimbatore. This was a unique case for us. I would like to thank all concerned police department for helping us in this case.”

Earlier, in an unprecedented ruling, a seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of India JS Khehar held sitting Calcutta High Court judge Justice CS Karnan guilty of contempt of “grievous nature” and sentenced him to six months in jail.

The bench stated that Justice Karnan has to be looked at like an “ordinary citizen” of the country and cannot be treated like a sitting judge in this case. Justice Karnan was also found guilty of abusing the judiciary and judicial indiscretion. Then, CJI Khehar noted that “contempt is contempt”.

Last year, Karnan was transferred to Kolkata from Chennai and wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee accusing senior judges of corruption.

On February 8, the seven-judge bench had stripped Karnan of all judicial and administrative powers pending the contempt case.

On May 1, the seven-judge bench directed the Director General of Police, West Bengal to constitute a team of police personnel and ensure that Karnan is medically examined on May 4 and a report is submitted by May 8.
