Bengaluru: The funeral procession of an RSS worker, who lost his life on Friday, turned violent after some stone pelters hurled stones at the procession on Saturday morning.

The incident was reported in Bantwal taluk in the communally sensitive coastal Karnataka region. Police arrested a few people after they were found to be throwing stones at the procession from atop their buildings.

Police say about eight to ten vehicles, including a bus, were damaged during the procession that saw over 1,000 people turn up to pay their respects to the RSS worker. Even though police took things under control, tensions prevailed in the region.

The worker – Sharath Madiwala, in his late twenties – was hacked near his neck late Tuesday night by a gang of three men when he was shuttering shop for the day around 9.30 pm. Madiwala ran a laundry shop with his father. He succumbed to his injuries on Friday.

Prohibitory orders under section 144 have been in effect on four taluks in Dakshina Kannada district for nearly a month now after repeated communal disturbances.

A special team has been formed to nab Madiwala's murderers, IG (West) Harisekharan told News18.

Several BJP leaders, including MPs Shoba Karandlaje and Naveen Kumar Kateel, took part in a demonstration, and later courted arrest, over the recent spate of killings of innocent workers of the right-wing organisations. They demanded an NIA probe into political murders in the coastal region.

Police have, however, time and again, pointed out that many of the murders cited by the BJP have been motivated by personal or family-related disputes. In this case, however, it is too early to speculate on what the motive for the murder was, they said.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reiterated on Saturday that the strictest action would be taken against the culprits.
