Scientists in Kolkata Hold 'Darwin Week' to Dispel Doubts After Satyapal Singh Episode

Kolkata: Science organisations in the city came together to observe 'Darwin Week' from on Sunday to effectively put to rest any "confusion" regarding his 'theory of evolution'.

The 'Darwin Week' was being observed by the India March for Science Organising Committee, Kolkata and Breakthrough Science Society, West Bengal Chapter.

The event will look to generate awareness among the public, including students, about Darwin's contributions to the science of evolution, and "to dispel any confusion in this regard among the young minds," Prof Nilesh Maity said on behalf of the organisers.

Charles Darwin's theory of evolution was recently challenged by Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Satyapal Singh, at a function in Aurangabad. Singh had claimed that Darwin's theory was "scientifically wrong" and proposed to drop it from the school and college curriculum.

As his comments triggered a row, Singh's senior Cabinet colleague Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar said he had asked the MoS to refrain from making comments on issues such as Darwin's Evolution theory.

Eminent academicians from different institutions, students and reseachers will be taking part in seminars and popular talks in educational institutions in the city from February 12-18 during the 'Darwin Week'.
