New Delhi: Former Union Minister and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday had a word of appreciation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi for undertaking a visit to Israel but cautioned the government against losing the sight of India's longstanding support to the Palestinian cause.

Emphasising the importance of Indo-Israel relationship, the former Minister of State Foreign Affairs said that erstwhile UPA regime strengthened the relationship, adding that the current government had rightly briefed Arab countries that the visit was only to Israel.

"The government of India has made sure that the right balance between our relationship with Arab countries and Israel is struck," Tharoor said, adding that India was "grateful to Israel for its cooperation in defence sector".

Tharoor, however, sheds light on India's decades-long support to the Palestinian cause, urging the government not to overlook the matter and strive towards "a just solution to the Israel-Palestine" conflict.

PM Modi embarked on a 3-day visit, first by an Indian Prime Minister, to Israel on Tuesday, but his decision met with stern criticism at home. AIAMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi said that Prime Minister's visit defeated the purpose of India's long-standing espousal for the Palestinian state.

When asked about these apprehensions, Tharoor said: "It was the duty of the government to attend to the concerns of domestic and international voices, and make them understand that the relationship with Israel was as important as our relationship with Arab countries."
