Bhopal: Three days after Madhya Pradesh government announced a judicial probe into the alleged encounter killings of eight SIMI suspects at Acharpura village in the outskirts of Bhopal, Opposition questioned the government's intention behind the inordinate delay in issuing a formal probe order.

Criticising the state government's lackadaisical attitude, Congress state unit chief and party spokesperson KK Mishra on Monday said the delay in issuing formal orders raises doubts over the veracity of the encounter.

"It's possible the orders for judicial inquiry are delayed deliberately for tampering with the evidence and documents," Mishra told Pradesh18.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had last Thursday announced that (Retd.) Justice SK Pandey will probe the SIMI encounter. However formal orders on setting up of this inquiry are yet to be issued. (Retd.) Justice Pandey too has reportedly denied receiving any orders on the proposed judicial probe.

After Chouhan's announcement, Home minister Bhupendra Singh had said there was no need for a probe by the National Investigation Agency as a judicial probe was already announced.

Eight SIMI operatives who escaped from the Bhopal central jail on October 31 were gunned down by police hours later in an alleged encounter in the outskirts of the city. Questions were raised over the police version of events after mobile phone footage claimed to have been shot by villagers at the site became public.
