Temperatures Soar to 46.5 Degrees in Delhi and 48.7 in Rajasthan as Heatwave Intensifies

New Delhi: Heatwave like conditions peaked in the capital on Tuesday evening, as the city recorded a sizzling high of 46.5 degrees Celsius.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded the temperature at the station at Palam, while the station at Safdarjung recorded temperatures as high as 44.4 degrees Celsius.

The highest maximum temperature of the day was recorded as 48.7 degrees Celsius, at Ganganagar, in west Rajasthan.

The IMD predicted a dust storm or a thunderstorm for Delhi later in the evening.

The Department's 4pm bulletin forecast up to 25 percent heatwave like conditions for Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh and Vidharba.

It also predicted 50 percent heatwave like conditions in east Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and up to 75 percent in west Rajasthan.

However, a later forecast at 8.40 pm predicted that heat wave conditions are likely to abate gradually from parts of northwest India and central India from Tuesday, in view of the likely setting in of easterly winds over the northern plains.

Temperatures continued to soar nonetheless with the 8.40 pm forecast confirming temperatures in in Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana were "appreciably above normal", i.e 3.1 degrees Celsius to 5 degrees Celsius above the average.
