New Delhi: Two Kashmiri youths studying at the Central University of Haryana, Mahendergarh, were allegedly beaten up by a group of around 10-15 men on Friday.

The assault occurred at around 2.30pm when Aftab and Amjad were returning after Friday prayers. Students of the university said that the attack was completely unprovoked and the two were targeted only for their Kashmiri identity.

The victims suffered several bruises on the faces, arms and legs. There were taken to a local government hospital and were discharged after being treated for their injuries.

Their batch mates also alleged that police initially refused to file a complaint, and an FIR was only registered after the university proctor intervened in the matter.

The FIR has been filed under sections 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code.

Mahendergarh’s DSP, however, denied any “Kashmir angle” behind the attack. “The students were not targeted because of their identity,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has also intervened in the matter. She tagged Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar in a tweet demanding strict action in the case.

“Shocked & disturbed to hear reports of Kashmiri students being assaulted in Mahendargarh, Haryana. I urge the authorities to investigate & take strict action. @mlkhattar,” she wrote.
