Lucknow: The Yogi Adityanath government has appointed Triple Talaq victim and BJP worker Sofia Ahmed as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Minority Commission.

The state government inducted eight members in the commission on Tuesday. Besides Ahmed, former Meerut Mahanagar BJP president Suresh Jain, former state vice-president of minority morcha Sukhdarshan Bedi, former Braj region secretary Manoj Kumar Maseeh, former state party executive member Kunwar Sayed Iqbal Haider, Ghaziabad BJP leader Kunwar Afzal Chaudhary, former minority morcha state presidents Mohd Aslam and Rumana Siddiqui were elected as members.

Former national president of BJP’s minority wing Mohd Tanveer Haider Usmani has been appointed the chairperson of the commission.

A Commerce graduate, Ahmed, who is one of the petitioners challenging the instant divorce practice in the Supreme Court, joined the Bharatiya Janta Party a year ago.

The 24-year-old woman hails from Chennai and was married to a brother of a Samajwadi Party leader in Kanpur.

According to Ahmed, her husband divorced her by uttering talaq thrice in an inebriated condition and pushed her out of the house in the middle of the night with their 40-day-old baby.

“I was left helpless. But later I got to know that the BJP had launched a campaign against triple talaq. That was my motivation for joining the party in Kanpur in December 2016. Last year, I met state women welfare minister Rita Bahuguna Joshi with some other triple talaq victims,” said Sofia, adding that earlier she had reservations about the image of UP CM Yogi Adityanath, but is now impressed with his style of working.

Ahmed believes that the triple talaq verdict is a slap on the face of religious leaders who did not do much to get rid of instant triple talaq.
