Deoli-Banigram village has several houses where only the women have survived as the men are still missing after the deluge.

New Delhi: Eighteen days after flash floods and landslides devastated Uttarakhand disaster, the loss of lives and property in the far-flung villages is now coming to light. Approximately 1,100 villages are still cut off from the state and many people are hoping their missing relatives will return. Rescue teams are facing problems due to bad weather. In Deoli-Banigram village of Guptkashi at least 56 people are still missing while the nearby villages have over 100 people in the tragedy.

Deoli-Banigram village has several houses where only the women have survived as the men are still missing after the deluge. The village is about 2 km from Lamgaundi and 14 km from Guptkashi. There is no road to reach the village.

The route to Deoli from Lamgaundi is a tough uphill climb. While Lamgaundi has lost 20 people, in Deoli 56 men are still missing. The village in deep shock and there is a deathly silence all around. The Tiwary family has lost 10 of its men in the tragedy in Kedarnath. All of them were priests and also used to run boarding and lodging facilities for the tourists. Before the tragedy the family was very happy, but now their home is enveloped in a pall of gloom. Now the family compromises mostly of women.

Other families have similar tales to tell. When floods came the men of Deoli-Banigram sent the women and children to a higher place and they stayed back to earn a living. But after the deluge, none of them returned.

While roads and buildings will be repaired soon, but the families will probably never overcome the loss of their loved ones.
