Dehradun: A 19-year-old student of Garhwal University, who was set on fire by a taxi driver after she resisted his attempt to sexually assault her, has been shifted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital as she continued to be critical.

Police said the incident took place on Sunday evening when the woman was driving back home on her scooter. Bunty, the 31-year-old taxi driver, was following her in his car. When the woman stopped near a shop, the accused threw petrol at her and set her ablaze. Bunty fled in his car but was nabbed by the police soon after.

Pauri Garhwal police station in-charge Manoj Raturi said, "It seems like an one-sided affair, the accused has been arrested". The police said Bunty had been stalking her for sometime after she rejected his advances.

The girl suffered 80% burn injuries and was fighting for her life at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Rishikesh. However, she was sent in an air ambulance to Delhi on Wednesday afternoon.

Angry students of her university were demanding capital punishment for the accused who was arrested the same day the crime was committed.
