New Delhi: Veteran filmmaker and doyen of Tamil cinema, K Balachander is no more. The 84 year old was admitted to Cauvery hospital in Chennai in the second week of December for treatment of urinary infection.

The director was said to be critical and was in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital for a while now.

Known for introducing stars such as Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Saritha and Prakash Raj, Balachander has made over 150 films including "Aval Ora Thodar Kathai", "Apoorva Raagangal", "Avargal", "Varumayin Niram Sigappu" and "47 Natkal".

When he was first admitted in the hospital a few weeks, Rajinikanth was among the first "students" to visit his mentor in the hospital.
