Victims meet to commemorate the 18th death anniversary of Uphaar fire tragedy

To mark the 18th death anniversary of the 59 precious lives lost in the Uphaar fire, The Association of the Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT) is holding a Havan & Shanti Path at “Smriti Upavan” opposite Uphaar Cinema.

New Delhi: It has been 18 years since 59 people lost their lives when a fire gutted the Uphaar theatre on June 13, 1997. However, the victims are still eyeing the courts in the hope of justice.

To mark the 18th death anniversary of the 59 precious lives lost in the Uphaar fire, The Association of the Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT) is holding a Havan & Shanti Path at “Smriti Upavan” opposite Uphaar Cinema. AVUT was formed on June 30, 1997 in the aftermath of the man-made tragedy that struck Delhi.

After a lengthy trial, brothers Sushil and Gopal Ansal were found guilty of "causing death by negligent" charge. A Delhi trial court awarded them two years' rigorous imprisonment in November 2007. In December 2008, the Delhi High Court reduced the duo's sentences from two years to one year and they were granted bail by the Supreme Court on January 30, 2009. An appeal challenging the one-year sentence is still pending in the apex court. The order on sentencing is still awaited.

Charges of tampering evidence matter pertaining were framed against Sushil Ansal, Gopal Ansal and 5 others under section 409,109,201 & 120B Indian Penal Code by Ld. CMM Patiala House Court on 31 May, 2014. But a year later, only one witness has been examined.
