East Lansing: The National Football League's Super Bowl is a big event in the broadcasting calendar of the US. The Super Bowl ads have become a tradition as the championship game itself. The air time also doesn't come cheap, companies have to shell out as much as $3 million of a 30 second slot. As many as 63 commercials were aired during the Green Bay Packers versus Pittsburgh Steelers game.
A group of professors at Michigan State University's Department of Advertising, Public Relations and Retailing have also carried on with their 14-year-old tradition of rating the advertisements and came up with the top Super Bowl ads of the year. A Volkswagen Passat ad featuring a young Darth Vader took first place. Volkswagen also took the second-place for its Beetle 2012 ad.
The top Super Bowl commercials:
1st: Volkswagen Passat
2nd: Volkswagen Beetle
3rd (tie): Audi Castle, Pepsi Max, Hyundai Elantra, Chrysler and Bud Light - rain
4th: Mercedes Benz
At the bottom of the list were commercials from Castrol oil, the movies Super 8 and Thor, HomeAway.com and the Mini Cooper.
Using a five-point grading, the 23 voting faculty members rated each commercial based on creativity, production and overall quality.
