Kolkata: Pet lovers in Kolkata will soon have a crematorium for their animal friends near Armenian Ghats along Hooghly the river.

The initiative has been taken by the West Bengal government. The Animal Resources Development Department was asked to chalk out a detailed plan in association with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to complete this project at the earliest.

The total cost of the project will be approximately Rs 25-30 Lakhs. An electrical furnace will be installed now, followed by another furnace later this year.

Speaking to News18, Minister for Animal Resources Development Swapan Debnath said, "This cremation ghat will be a great help to pet lovers. They often find it difficult to complete the rituals and the cremation of their pets. There will be a minimum charge, which will be decided later.”

The Vice-Chancellor of West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences, Professor Purnendu Biswas, who was also actively associated with this project, said, “Presently, we have the burial facility for pets at our campus in Kolkata’s Belgachia area. Those who avail the burial facility pay Rs 2,500 for the service.”
